Order Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black

I did a product search on Amazon for a region free portable dvd player and this was one of the nicer ones I was shown. When it arrived I tried some of the DVDs I have from Europe and Asia and it wouldn't play them. So I've had to return it.

So if like me you've been shown this when you searched for a "region free portable dvd player" don't make the same mistake I did! This only plays American DVDs.Get more detail about Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black.

Great Portable DVD Player. Better than I expected. It is a long time since I have the pleasure to see a great quality electronic product. The picture quality is amazing. The volume of the speakers is loud. And it has two earphones connections. And it can be connected to a TV, example in a hotel room when you are in a business trip. Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black Review

There are so many portable DVD players out there so to decide I checked all the online reviews I could find and picked this one. It was the right choice for me. I rarely travel, and I wanted a player that was very light for carrying around the house. This is just perfect. I use it while cleaning and/or cooking, so it goes from room to room easily. Other uses for me are when I'm exercising or just sitting outside on my porch.

I did charge the battery, but I rarely use it. I just plug the player in wherever I happen to be, so I really don't know how long the battery life is. The volume would be too low (without headphones) if watching from across a room, but that hasn't been an issue for me yet either. Best of all, I can plug in the headphones and watch in bed without disturbing my sleeping husband.

The picture quality is exceptional and the sound quality is certainly acceptable. I'm very pleased with this one. Get more detail about Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black.

Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black Top Quality

At first, I was just happy that the buttons didn't really look like buttons. My two year old will push every circle in sight. Then I was thrilled to discover the "hold" button on the side of this portable DVD player. So far she hasn't discovered the hold and power switches that are on the side.

Unfortunately, the "open" button doesn't lock when HOLD is pushed and it's placed prominently on the top of the player. Taping a small piece of cardboard over it keeps her from constantly opening the machine!Get more detail about Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black.

Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black This instant

This is a replacement for my old Sony DVP-FX810. While the picture and sound quality is outstanding the unit design is very poor comparing to DVP-FX810. I own a lots of SONY equipment and noticed that starting about five, six years ago external design of their products became weird. Oh well, at least the quality is still good.
Bad:
1. No acrylic screen protection like on DVP-FX810. Why do I need it? One word - kids.
2. Touch buttons instead of push buttons (DVP-FX810) - hard to operate in a dim light. Slightest touch activates them and you have no idea what you are touching until you touch it. I am referring to operating in dark or poor lighting conditions.
3. Power ON/OFF. On DVP-FX810 it was push button type slider which allowed also to turn power on and off by remote control. On 930 it's a slide switch. Slide to ON position, slide to OFF position. You cannot turn the power on or off with remote any more.
Also the location of the switch (on the side) allows for accidental switching ON.
4. Shape (side view of the front of the player). It is difficult to open the screen even for me - there is nothing to grab on to. I was watching my six years old struggling to open the player.
Good:
1. Bigger screen with practically same outside dimensions.
2. The battery from the old player fits the new one. (I'm sure SONY missed that)
3. And that's about it..

Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black Best Quality

This is a great portable DVD player. We own a Sienna and the player fits snugly between front seat armrests. Battery lasts 5+ hours. The 180 degree screen turn which allows it to fold into itself adds to the functionality. Only negative, if battery isn't charged and using only DC, the car charger plugin tends to wiggle loose causing the screen to blank out (movie will find its place, though, when firmly inserted) - this may have been our initial setup before we figured out the armrest positioning. All in all, terrific product and definitely beats installing a roof flip-down.Get more detail about Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black.

Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black Get it now!

FYI, the color Black is NOT Black but rather a very dark (metallic) blue. Its pretty dam close to Black but bottom line it is NOT Black.

As far as the player its basicly a bare bones player, nothing special about it, basically everyone primarily buys it for the long battery life and tablet style 9" 480 standard resolution screen, amazingly this standard definition screen is on the high end compared to majority of other portable screens out there. Screen brightness is good. Personally I dont think anti-glare matt finish help reduce glare, I would rather have a glossy finish for more crisper display. Sound quality lacks any bass but that was expected, volume on the other hand is pretty decent for small speakers. Disc load and seek times were relatively quick. The touch controls are exactly that touch, next to impossible to control if watching a movie in the dark, you can not see where the controls are, one of those cool ideas but in the end just not proactical.

As always Sony disapoints, no car headrest adapter, I mean how difficult is it to put one together, Phillips has an awsome "Smart" headrest adapter for some of their models, at the very least they provide a pouch/strap for the headrest for other models. Honeslty I wish I could have purchased a Philips model but was unavailable. So in the end Sony it was.

My solution for the headrest is simply to make my own straps with clips that will wrap around the headrest, the straps will slide basically around the middle portion next to the swivel/pivot arm. Ah you will then say how does ones change the disc, since it is strapped shut. Anyone else fancy slot loading? I wish. Anyways, although the straps pose an inconvience, I plan to play video from an iPod. I little difficult to find the proper straps but ebay to the rescue.

This portable player is just something to start with for our new car. Still pondering if I want to cut the headliner to install a overhead screen. For now this portable player (soft install) will get the job done.

Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black Buy Now

Ok ill be honest as I can with only owning the player for a couple of weeks

Im not going to restate the features or whats included in the box since those are already listed.

Movies I have watched on the player:
Horton hears a who
Parts of spiderman
Wall-E

Okay first off ill give you the warnings. This is a widescreen player, buying a widescreen movie will not fill the screen like you are expecting. It all depends on what the movie was shot in(what ratio) widescreen is 16:9 if it wasnt shot in that you WILL HAVE black bars on top and bottom. Also I for fully movies it will have vertical bars. You can stretch a full movie and it will fill the screen. It looks semi wider but not very noticeable.

Other notable things to mention
-remote does not have on and off located on it.
-some people say you can only skip frames with the arrow keys on the player, this is not true, you have to use the little directional pad for normal reverse and fastforward
-If you turn off the player completely it will not keep your spot you were at.
-only turn the screen to the left!! You may break the hinge if you try moving it to the right
-sound is much better in headphones then on the player but the speakers on the player itself are quite nice, I suggest for low to medium noisy environments its fine, very high volume it gets a little distorted.

Thoughts on the video quality.
-For animation movies its beautiful, definetly perfect for the kids
-for spiderman like I watched it looks a slight bit pixelated from 6-12 inches away so just be prepared for that.
-Fast moving it has small ghosting but nothing you will hardly notice, I am a big fps game player and it doesnt hurt my eyes or take away from the movies for me.
-The colors look very sharp and beautiful on the screen

Thoughts on the sound and noise level
-sound level is decent for the small speakers that come with it
-the noise level when the player is searching for a scene is audible but not annoying, while playing the movie its near silent

Heat and battery
-Very minimal heat coming from the battery pack. Also very sleak looking battery attachment, not great idea having it become the bottom of player because if you drop it chances are you will damage the battery clips.
-Watched horton hears a who which is about an hour and half long and have 2/3 of battery remaining.

Other options and information
-Battery charging takes about 3 hours from completely dead
-When you adjust the screen zoom level to full or normal and you go to a new scene or pause and return it seems to skip back to last level not a huge deal but it gets annoying.
-Lack of usb port and or sd card slot was a dissapointment to me.
-Havent watched anything burned off of tv or used looked at any pics on the player yet.

All in all I think the player is worth the money, if you are like me and want something to just enjoy on a trip and don't have huge expectations on 1080p quality this player is fine. If you are looking for a higher resolution player its hard to find in this price range. Also this is one of the best looking players in picture quality from what I have read in reviews.

Problems and concerns.
-Lack of menu settings
-lack of sd slot or usb port
-doesnt rotate both ways
-More realistic real life films look a little washed out or grainy at times but more then acceptable for a portable player.
-only a 1 year warranty and ONLY a 30 day labor warranty.. WTF?for what the price point is I think its unacceptable specially being a portable unit, you want something to beable to last.
-price a little high considering some laptops are in 4-500 dollar range and do far more.(I only wanted to spend 150 so it wasnt worth it to me to shell out that kind of money.)

Its a great buy but I suggest getting a case for in the car, if I find one I LIKE and try it out I will update the review.

Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black Right now

I wanted this to hook up to my iPod. I travel on the train 3 hours a day and having a larger screen is a big plus. I had to buy the Cable for the iPod which was $60 and then a female and female plug to hook the two together. The good part is I now have about ten feet of cable. The bad news is I have ten feet of cable which is hard to deal with on the train. The picture is great with TV shows and movies from iTunes, but pixelated with some podcasts. There should be an easier cable to use.Get more detail about Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black.

Save Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black

The Sony DVP-FX930 is a full-featured, well-designed, player with great looking picture quality and ample sound output. The battery is rectangular, about 3/8 inch high, and designed to attach to the bottom of the player. This allows the player to retain its sleek rectangular shape. The rated life of the battery is an impressive six hours, but you are more likely to get closer to five hours of use.

The nine inch high resolution screen is capable of delivering sharp and crisp images. The actual dimensions of the screen are 7.8" wide by 4.4 " high. The screen can rotate a full 180 degrees in the clockwise direction. Since the screen can be positioned opposite of the base, the controls are located below the screen, where they can be easily accessed in this configuration. There is only one actual button, for the 'Enter' function, and it can be a pain to operate. The other controls are touch pads in a depressed concave band that runs across the display, just above the speakers. The controls are quite sensitive, and easy to operate with the tip of a finger, but being a bit recessed into the face, getting your finger to the surface sometimes takes a little effort. Fingernail contact works, but not as well. While you can jump scenes, forward or backward, you can't fast forward or fast reverse, using the controls on the unit, which is definitely inconvenient. Pressing the screen may not be what many are used to, so naturally there is a remote. For better responsiveness, the player has multiple sensors. The remote control unit (RMT-D191) is full featured, although some functions the unit does not have are 'Mute', 'Zoom', and 'Repeat A-B'. The layout of the buttons could have been designed to be more convenient, but that is not unusual. The required CR2025 battery is included.

With a set of large (for a DVD player) speakers, the level of sound produced is quite high, good for movies and concert videos. Besides standard DVD's and CD's, the Sony will also play burned CD's with MP3 files, but there is no tone control, so the sound will probably be trebly. Most DVD players are really slow at displaying large JPEG files, and that is true of this one as well. There is a sideshow function, which could be more convenient, and less frustrating, than trying to scroll through images. When you pop the cover, a detent stops the disc from spinning. The player has two headphone jacks, and audio in/out and video in/out jacks. There is also a 'Hold' switch which locks the controls on the unit, but allows the player to still be controlled by the remote. The cooling system is outstanding, as there are no major hot spots on the housing.

Standard accessories include the remote control, AC adapter, 12V auto adapter, and AV cord. The player has a non-glossy brushed metal finish, and is available in several colors. The screen frame, and top cover where the DVD is loaded are plastic, which helps to keep the weight down, but also means the unit will be prone to scratches and wear. Recharge time using the AC cord is listed at six hours. Use of the auto adapter is recommended with the engine running. With good image quality, high volume sound, and long battery life, Sony has delivered a winner. Great for travel, just pick your color. And in case there are any problems, get it from Amazon.Get more detail about Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black.

Cheapest Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black

This is my first portable DVD player. It sufficiently plays the DVD's. I do appreciate the fact that, like VHS tapes of yesteryear, when I power off the unit in the middle of a DVD, it picks up right where I left off. Sure wish the several I have had connected to my television did the same (vs. starting from square one).

The controls on the unit, particularly the volume control, are hard to get used to using. And, it would have been nice if the unit came with at least some type of protective carrying case. And I absolutely miss having a fast forward/backward and skip on the unit. The only way to do those functions is with the remote control.Get more detail about Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black.

Cheap Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black

The picture quality is good. The touch-buttons are sleek, the rotating screen is a good feature. if you plan on mounting it to the rear of a car seat.

These are the issues I had with this product:
* the touch-buttons are sometimes annoyingly unresponsive and you may have to press a couple of times.
* the joy-stick is very painful to use. I had a one-week learning curve - even then I would not get it right everytime. Everytime I pressed the directional button, I would end up pressing the enter key and inadverently going into the menu. I do *not* have big hands or, literally speaking, fat fingers. If you do, believe me, you will not be able to use the buttons. Sometimes you will want to select a menu and keep pressing the directional button. I am really surprised that none of the reviewers mention this. This is not a minor gripe. It is a major usability issue.
* ok, there may be a workaround for this, but by default the picture size is very tiny (a widescreen movie will take up a quarter of the screen with bands on all sides.) You go to the LCD menu, select options and make it 'Full' to stretch it out. Now everytime you press any button (stop or pause or menu), the screen reverts to the original quarter size. I apologize if there is some menu tweak (its not there in the manual for sure), but if not, its an excruciatingly annoying thing and should make you think twice before buying this product. Now it is possible that all portable DVD players have this issue, in which case you may not have a choice. But if you can do without a portable DVD player (buy a cheaper laptop), then for this reason alone stay away from portable players that have this display limitation. I have no idea when a DVD would ever take up the entire full screen.
* a month and 5 days after I ordered this from Amazon, I got a light blue vertical band about 0.5 in from the right border. That pretty much sealed the deal for me and I returned it to Amazon with a 20% penalty.

I usually find Sony products very durable and of high quality. I guess there is always a first time.Get more detail about Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black.

Buying Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black

Purchased this from Best Buy at a cost of $189 plus tax. The reviews I've read on here are accurate so i'll just mention a couple of things i didn't see in the other reviews:

In the Box: DVD unit, remote with battery, Car charger, assorted paperwork and some kind of TV-lookin...cable...gee-goggery with 5 prongs. (Prediction: You will shove these in a drawer somewhere and when you finally have the opportunity to use them six months down the road (if ever), you'll look in vain for a few hours before speeding off to the big box store in a cloud of exhaust and profanity to try to buy replacements. Your kids will find them when they're fighting over your stuff after you die.)

Yes, beautiful screen with great detail and color.
Yes, somewhat noisy when the unit is searching the disc.
The menu button on the unit is somewhat small and cumbersome-recommend using the remote to change screen settings.
Bonus: Regarding the power cord-my old Panasonic had an actual small brick style 2 piece cord. This cord is one piece, much more compact and easier to travel with-and no brick. Surprisingly this made a difference.
Good speakers. Quality audio from about 5 feet away with volume setting of only 7 out of 20 without the headphones. (20 is LOUD! very nice) That's rare for the portables I've seen.
Nice small footprint even with the battery attached. Not over heavy for a nine inch.
Wow the remote is responsive. (remote battery included in box)
That's my take. Hope it helps someone.

Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black Review

This is my 3rd portable DVD player and the best one yet. I have a cabin in the woods with no electricity and watch movies at night with the kids. This player will play 3 full length movies before needing to be recharged using the built in speakers at half volume and the back light set at 1/3. Depending on the coding of the movie you may need to manually change the LCD mode from the default of "normal" to "full". To recharge the battery (every 2 or 3 days), I plug it into my vehicle during the day and it is fully charged in about 4 hours. My only minor complaint is the layout of the buttons on the remote. It may be more expensive than some of the other units on the market but it performs perfectly. The swivel screen also works well when travelling in the car and should work great for air travel as well as it allows you to lay it flat in your lap for viewing.Get more detail about Sony DVP-FX930 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black.
